I adore middle-schoolers: kids between the ages of 9 and 12. After years of mentoring middle and high teachers and writing non-fiction, I'm currently working on a contemporary fantasy series for middle-grade girls. What a challenge! The one thing I know for sure is that you cannot hand this special group of readers watered down young adult fiction or 'watered up' chapter books. Would you like to help me--and yourselves--craft the best middle school fiction we can?

What: A book club for avid romance novel readers. Meetups not exclusively limited to book discussions. My hope is to get to know new people and building some new friendships (most of my friends are in Europe or scattered across the country). Who: Any avid romance novel reader with an open mind and a sense of humor. Why: I haven't been able to find a book club geared towards romance novels (most exclude them), and especially not in the East Bay. I commute a lot during the week for work, so I woul …

It's called writing practice because it's like singers doing the scales or Buddhists meditating. This is a regular, down-home, garden-variety way to practice your writing and keep the words and juices flowing. NO experience is necessary! The group originally started as an Artist's Way group for followers of The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron. I (Meredith), …
Small groups will get together to read aloud to one another and appreciate the written and spoken word (and simply have a good time). Each person brings a short selection (fiction, poetry, nonfiction, whatever). Folks also bring drink and nibbles to share. Fancy or not. Meetings will vary; formats will evolve. My small kitchen will be the setting for some events; perhaps others will volunteer their kitchens as well. We may also decide to have thematic events, such as reading appropriate selectio …
Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath, Toni Morrison, Jeanette Winterson, Ursula Le Guin +++ ... join a group that celebrates the feminine voice and seeks to explore & magnify it. If you are a reader, a writer, or a philosopher...please join this group. Men welcome as well, though you will be thoroughly vetted for your contributive potential. :) This is a safe haven for those who seek to nurture and grow the many faces of femininity. Please bring yourself and your inspiration, unbridled. I look fo …
